Vis lies further out than Brač, Hvar or Šolta, and the car ferry from Split, Jadrolinija's line 602, takes 140 minutes without calling anywhere else. Since the winter timetable started at the end of September there have been two ferries a day in each direction: Vis departures at 05:30 and 15:30, Split departures at 11:00 and 18:30. Fridays run earlier, and on Sundays the first boat from Vis waits until 07:30.
The passenger alternative is a catamaran on state fast-boat line 9602, operated by Kapetan Luka – Krilo. It makes one trip each way a day: 07:00 from Vis and 15:00 from Split on most days, 20:30 from Split on Fridays, and 18:00 from Vis on Sundays, when there is no morning boat. On Tuesdays it also calls at Hvar town and on Wednesdays at Milna on Brač.
If you are coming from Split, the timetable shapes your arrival rather than your day: the 11:00 ferry lands at 13:20 and the evening boat at 20:50, and nothing returns until the next morning. Islanders use the line the other way round, with the 05:30 ferry reaching Split at 07:50 and the catamaran even earlier, at 08:10.

Why the catamaran costs no more than the ferry this autumn
Since the summer tariff ended on 27 September, a foot passenger pays €7.20 on the Vis ferry, down from €9.10, and a standard car pays €40.60, down from €52.00, provided it stays below five metres in length and two in height. The car price covers the vehicle only. Only coach and truck drivers ride free under the tariff, so whoever drives a hire car buys a passenger ticket as well, as does everyone else in the car.
On the catamaran the adult fare to Vis is the same €7.20, according to AOLPP's published tariff for line 9602. Children aged 3 to 12 pay €3.60 on the ferry and €4.40 on the catamaran; children under 3 travel free, and babies under one do not need a ticket at all. Whichever way you travel the price does not change, and harbour dues and tax are already in it.
| Adult | € 7.20 |
| Child 3–12 | € 3.60 |
| Car up to 5 m long and 2 m high | € 40.60 |
| Car over 5 m or over 2 m high | € 69.80 |
| Motorbike or moped | € 12.10 |
| Bicycle | € 7.20 |
| Caravan or camper up to 5 m | € 76.40 |
| Adult, off-season | € 7.20 |
| Child 3–12 | € 4.40 |
| Adult, 29 May – 27 September | € 9.10 |
| Car up to 5 m, 29 May – 27 September | € 52 |

Berths 18, 19 and 21 in Split, one landing on Vis
Split harbour – ferry berths 18/19 (ferry) and 21 (catamaran)
Ferries and fast boats share the big harbour in front of Split's bus and railway stations, so you can walk from either to the boat. In the port authority's public departure list for 4–9 October, the Vis ferry was given berth 18 or 19 and the catamaran berth 21. Berths are allocated day by day, so check the departure boards on the quay or the port authority's online list on the morning you travel.
Vis town ferry landing
Both boats dock in Vis town, on the island's north side. Komiža, on the far west coast, has no direct boat from Split: allow for the drive across the island if you are staying there or heading for the Biševo boat. On weekdays the first ferry back to the mainland leaves Vis at 05:30.
Out past Šolta and Hvar into open water
The ferry heads south-west from Split, passes between Šolta and the western tip of Hvar and makes no stops before Vis town. The catamaran follows much the same course but calls at Hvar town on Tuesdays and at Milna, on Brač, on Wednesdays. Neither operator publishes a distance; Jadrolinija gives the ferry crossing as 140 minutes.
Planning the crossing to Vis
- Hire car: ferry only
Only the line 602 ferry carries cars, motorbikes and campers. The catamaran takes foot passengers and their luggage.
- A ticket holds your place
According to Jadrolinija, a line 602 ticket also reserves your place on the chosen sailing. With a car, buy before you queue.
- Fridays are different
Friday ferries leave Split at 10:00 and 17:00 and Vis at 05:30 and 14:00. The Friday catamaran from Split is an evening boat, at 20:30.
- Monday 12 October
Jadrolinija has announced that the evening ferry from Split to Vis that day leaves at 19:30 rather than 18:30.
- Luggage
Each passenger's first 20 kg of luggage is free on the ferry; above that the tariff allows €0.60 per extra 10 kg.
Both lines are contracted by AOLPP, the state agency that publishes every island timetable and tariff in Croatia, which is why the catamaran's fares can be read in the agency's tariff even though its operator's site is vague about them. In the Split port authority's departure list for 4–9 October, the only boats for Vis were the ferry Oliver and the catamaran Krilo Eclipse. The Wednesday call at Milna overlaps with the line 9601 catamaran from Split to Milna via Rogač, and on Tuesdays the catamaran shares Hvar town with TP Line's 9604 fast boat to Vela Luka and Lastovo.
For the Blue Cave you need Komiža, on the opposite side of Vis, not Vis town. From there the public Komiža – Biševo boat (line 612) runs all year but only on certain days outside the summer, so match your ferry from Split to its timetable before you book a room.
Getting to Vis from Split in autumn and winter
How many hours does the Vis ferry take?
Jadrolinija gives 140 minutes. The timetable agrees: the 11:00 from Split arrives at 13:20 and the 05:30 from Vis reaches Split at 07:50.
How late can I leave Split for Vis?
The 18:30 ferry, except on Fridays, when the last ferry is at 17:00 but the catamaran leaves at 20:30. From 6 December the Sunday evening ferry moves to 19:00 and the Sunday catamaran to 20:30.
Is it worth taking a rental car to Vis?
It is possible on the line 602 ferry only. A normal-sized car costs €40.60 this autumn, with a separate ticket for the driver and for each passenger.
Is the catamaran faster?
On its non-stop days, yes: it leaves Vis at 07:00 and arrives in Split at 08:10. On Tuesdays (via Hvar) and Wednesdays (via Milna) it arrives at 08:35 and 08:30.
Is Vis a realistic day trip from Split in October?
Only just. The 11:00 ferry lands at 13:20 and the last ferry back leaves at 15:30, or you arrive at 12:20 and leave at 14:00 on Fridays. The catamaran does not help, because it leaves Split in the afternoon.
What happens to the Vis boats on 25 December?
Partly. On 25 December the 11:00 ferry from Split and the 16:30 from Vis are cancelled; the other sailings run as timetabled.
