Until 2015 Zadar's ferries loaded in the old harbour on the city peninsula, in the heart of the historic centre, one of the busiest passenger ports in Croatia at the time. In April 2015 the Zadar Port Authority opened Gaženica, initially with a temporary terminal building, and moved all domestic car-ferry traffic there; the permanent terminal was formally opened in 2019. If you are taking a car to Iž, Gaženica is where your trip begins.
Jadrolinija's line 435 is the island's only car ferry. It lands at Bršanj, near the village of Mali Iž, and on Tuesdays and Saturdays continues to Rava and Rava Mala. The off-season timetable from 28 September runs one round trip a day, but each weekday has its own hours, from an 08:00 departure on Mondays and Thursdays to 15:30 on Sundays, so check the row for your day before you set off.
Travelling without a car, you have another choice. The passenger catamaran on line 9405 still sails from the old-town quay, where the ferries used to leave, and calls at both villages on Iž. For foot passengers it is usually the easier option; line 435 is the one to use if you need a vehicle, a trailer or a lot of luggage.

€20.20 for the car, and a ticket for the driver too
A standard hire car, up to 5 metres long and 2 metres high, costs €20.20 from Gaženica to Bršanj until 31 December, and the same to Rava or Rava Mala. That covers the car only. The price list waives the passenger fare just for bus and lorry drivers, so a car driver buys a €3.50 passenger ticket like everyone else in the car.
The summer season, which ended on 27 September, was dearer: €28.50 for the same car and €5.60 per passenger. Bicycles pay one passenger fare. A single costs the same either way, port dues and VAT included.

Gaženica on the mainland, Bršanj on the island
Gaženica ferry port, Zadar
Gaženica is Zadar's purpose-built ferry and cruise port, south-east of the old town, and every car ferry in the city now uses it. The Jadrolinija ticket office inside the terminal opens at 04:30 from Monday to Saturday and at 06:00 on Sundays and holidays, closing at 23:00. Jadrolinija does not publish which berth the Iž ferry uses; follow the port's lane signs for Iž or ask at the ticket office.
Bršanj ferry port, Iž
Bršanj is the car-ferry landing on the Zadar-facing side of Iž, close to the village of Mali Iž. Every sailing on line 435 calls here, and it is the only harbour on Iž that the car ferry uses; for Veli Iž, the island's other village, you continue on the island itself. Jadrolinija's small office at Bršanj opens half an hour before departure.
Gaženica to Bršanj, and on to Rava twice a week
The ferry leaves Gaženica, crosses the Zadar Channel and lands at Bršanj on the side of Iž that faces the city. On Tuesdays and Saturdays it carries on along the island to Rava, calling first at Rava and then at Rava Mala before returning the same way. Jadrolinija's route page quotes a total journey time that does not match its own timetable, so this page sticks to the clock times in the table.
Driving onto the Iž ferry
- Set the sat-nav for Gaženica
Put in Gaženička cesta, not the old town. Liburnska obala, on the peninsula, is where the passenger-only catamaran and boat to Iž leave from, and they take no cars.
- Hire cars and campervans
Anything longer than 5 metres or taller than 2 metres moves into the €39.90 band, which catches many vans and small campervans. Measure before you book.
- Tickets for the car and for each person
Buy them at the Gaženica ticket office or on Jadrolinija's website. According to Jadrolinija, buying ahead secures your place on the chosen departure.
- Mondays and Thursdays end in October
The 08:00 Monday and Thursday departure appears in the timetable only until 29 October 2026. After that, plan around the other five days.
- Holidays mean no ferry
Croatian public holidays such as 1 November, 18 November, Christmas Day and 26 December have no sailing on this line.
When Gaženica opened to ferries, the ministry announced that fifteen car-ferry lines would run straight into the new port while eight passenger-boat lines stayed on the peninsula. Bršanj also has a late link to Zadar that surprises visitors. TP Line's fast boat on line 9406, which runs from Zadar to Sali and Zaglav on Dugi otok, calls at Bršanj at 21:25 on its third weekday trip and leaves for Zadar at 21:30, except on Saturdays, during school holidays and on public holidays. It carries passengers only, but it is the latest way off Iž on a weekday evening.
Taking a car to Iž: what visitors need to know
Does the Iž car ferry leave from Zadar old town?
No. Since 2015 all car ferries in Zadar use Gaženica, south-east of the centre. Only the passenger catamaran and boat to Iž still leave from Liburnska obala in the old town.
Which harbour on Iž does the ferry use?
Bršanj, near Mali Iž. It is the only car-ferry port on the island; the ferry does not call at Veli Iž.
How much does it cost to take a car to Iž?

Which days can I get to Rava by car?
Tuesdays and Saturdays only. The ferry leaves Gaženica at 11:00 and reaches Rava Mala at 13:25, then leaves Rava Mala at 16:15 for the return.
Is there a ferry on Monday in November?
The timetable lists the Monday and Thursday sailing only until 29 October 2026. For November and December, plan on the Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday sailings.
What is the last ferry back from Iž on Sunday?
The 19:45 from Bršanj, which reaches Gaženica at 21:00. It is the only return sailing on a Sunday.
Can I take a bicycle?
Yes. On line 435 a bicycle is charged as one passenger fare, so €3.50 to Bršanj in the off-season.
Does the ferry run on public holidays?
Only on Easter Monday, which follows the weekday timetable, and 1 May, which follows Saturday's. On every other holiday line 435 does not sail.
